第六端:探望囚者

這幅畫的主題,是兩個基督形象的人:兩者都有五傷及頭戴茨冠。紅色的那位正在探望被囚的藍色人形。為什麼兩者都是基督形象?一方面,耶穌在瑪竇福音25章中說過,他認同那些最小的弟兄姊妹,所以,為探望者來說,囚者是基督。另一方面,探望者所帶來的安慰及鼓勵,為囚者來說,探望者就是天主慈悲的化身,所以探望者也是基督。兩人握手周邊的黃色光環,是當實踐探望囚者這慈悲的美德時,所散發的聖善。這圖畫用了三原色,代表實踐慈悲是基督徒最原始的責任

伍維烈修士
為了把神學與我以往的景觀建築師訓練揉合,我花了兩年時間於耶魯大學神學院研讀一個名為宗教與藝術的學程。
我希望將方濟靈修元素透過視藝表達。作為修士,我相信藝術製作是祈禱的方法之一,藝術品也是用作為一種的視覺宣講。根據會規,小兄弟的宣講是要簡潔及直接,所以我畫的圖像都盼以此為目標。

Seven Corporal Work of Mercy
6th “Visit the imprisoned”

This painting features two Christ-figures who both have five wounds and the crown of thorns on their heads. The red Christ-figure is visiting a blue Christ-figure, who is behind bars. Why is Christ visiting Christ? On the one hand, when a prison visitor visits an imprisoned brother or sister, he would see Christ in the imprisoned friend, just as we have been taught in Matthew 25. Hence the blue person is a Christ figure. On the other hand, when an imprisoned person is visited, the prison visitor is acting in a Christ-like way and the imprisoned person feels the mercy of God through the prison visitor. This is why the red person is also a Christ figure. The glow around the holding hands of the two persons is the halo of holiness that shines forth when this virtue of mercy is practiced by visiting the imprisoned. The use of three primary colours symbolizes the idea that practising mercy is of primary importance to all Christians.

Trained as a landscape architect, I have done further studies in programme called Religion and the Arts at Yale Divinity School.
I aim to express elements of Franciscan spirituality through visual arts. As a friar, I believe that the art-making process is a way of prayer and the artwork itself is a form of visual preaching. In the Rule of St Francis, we are instructed to preach in a simple and direct way so I try to keep the message of my images simple and direct.
